Calligraphy/hand-lettering for beginners in 5 simple steps

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

Calligraphy has gained a lot of popularity in recent times. Everyone seems to want calligraphy done on almost everything for weddings and other events, which is great cause I absolutely love calligraphy as well.

However, If you are starting out and tried a hand at it, you know it isn't as easy as it looks. There are countless tutorials out there for beginners which teach you in depth about selecting the right materials and how to use them to give you best results. I've invested in quite a few myself, but learned that learning calligraphy requires patience, dedication and tons of practice.

If you aren't someone who is willing to spend your money or time investing in this long process and looking for a quick fix for an event, this blog post is for you.

This is a quick cheat method, which means the results will not be exactly as it were if you took the longer route but thats expected like with most things. Remember tracing over images using a tracing sheet back in the day? Yep, that’s what we are going to do ;)

Another popular material in the wedding community are acrylics. Moving from the rustic theme to classy and elegant, acrylics do perfect justice. That takes us to,

Faux calligraphy on acrylic in F I V E simple steps:

1. Gather together the material you will need for this project:

Acrylic of any size, a paint pen, cleaning cloth, print of the image you would like to re- create on the acrylic surface.

If you do not have an acrylic piece don’t worry, you can use one from an old picture frame.

2. Clean the acrylic surface with a clean cloth, any microfibre cloth would do.

3. Print out the lettering you want on your acrylic on a paper. You can either print something you found online (there are tons of websites that offer free printables) or create your own design.

P.S:I usually create my own designs, procreate and photoshop are some good tools that help create your own designs.

4. Next, place this paper underneath your acrylic surface.

5. Grab a pen, (paint pens are the best) and trace away!

Quick tip: If you are trying this for the first time, be sure to use a bigger acrylic and bigger font size, and one thats not too intricate. Once you get the hang of it, you can try intricate, minute fonts.

As always, do let me know if you try this and how it turns out! Happy lettering!
